Join the Club

We’re open to all. If you are an experienced professional or just like taking photographs, we’ve got something for everyone. Whether you use top-of-the-range pro cameras or prefer to use a smartphone, the main thing is you have an interest in photography and wish to learn more or share with other like-minded photographers.

Galashiels Camera Club meets weekly, from September until April, to encourage and improve photographers of all abilities and interests. In summer, we hold monthly evening meets at local photographically interesting locations as well as a group outing somewhere interesting, usually in June.

Come along to the Red Room, Langlee Community Centre, Galashiels (TD1 2LP) for friendly helpful advice, at 7:30 pm most Wednesdays (see syllabus) and see what we can do for you – just bring an open mind!

FAQs

“Do I have to pay my membership fee before attending a meeting?”

Of course not, why not come along to a meeting or two to see if the club is for you. If you then wish to join, and we hope you do, then merely fill in the membership application form and email it to the club galacameraclub@outlook.com Alternatively, you can hand over the form and membership fee in person at the next meeting you attend. We also accept payment by BACS, details will be given when you send in your application.

“I don’t know anything about cameras, can I still join?”

Of course, you can. If learning about photography and photographic equipment is your desire then we’re here to help. If you just want to meet our members and discuss things photographic that’s fine too. Your degree of involvement is entirely up to you.

“I don’t have a camera, do I need one to join?”

No. A few of our members use a smartphone only. Our members own an extensive range of cameras and associated equipment between them, so if its advice you’re after we can help

“Does the club have studio facilities?”

Unfortunately not, however, we do have studio lighting and a backdrop which members can use for a small fee. We no longer have darkroom facilities. We do have ColorMunki screen and printer colour profiling equipment for members’ use.

“I am not a member yet, can I join in a Zoom meeting?”

Of course, if you are interested in joining the club and just want to try it out email us at galacameraclub@outlook.com and we’ll send you an invitation link to join the meeting. We don’t as yet know if we will be having further Zoom meetings. Keep a check on our website news page.

Yes. You can join at any point in the season. Membership subscription drops to half price after the Christmas break.

“Do you have instructional or tutorial evenings?”

Yes. Some of our invited speakers do give instructional content depending on their presentation. They will all be happy to answer questions. Although we don’t offer formal training we do have at least two practical nights per season where we try to engage in hands-on photographic projects. Studio flash work, digital editing, and print mounting are examples. It will vary from season to season. Many of our members will be happy to give hands-on advice too, just ask.

“Can I advertise my used equipment within the club?”

Yes, you can. We have a For Sale section on our website but the first option would most likely be through our Facebook page.

“Is there a social aspect to the club?”

Yes. At the end of each meeting, there is time for a blether over tea and coffee, although that may be restricted for a while yet. We have a quiz night and an evening meal around Christmas time. We plan a summer club outing as well as summer informal monthly outdoor meetings at a photographically interesting location in The Borders
